We are pleased that you and your physician have chosen Olathe Medical Center for your child's upcoming procedure. We encourage you and your child to ask questions. Let the staff know of any special needs your child may have. We want your child's visit to be as comfortable as possible. The Preoperative Assessment Nurse will be calling 2-3 days before your child's procedure to review the pre-procedure instructions, and to obtain a past medical history. Please have the following information available to share with her when she calls:

  • List of your child's allergies

  • List of any over-the-counter or prescriptions medications your child is taking
  • List of the surgeries and procedures your child has had

  • IMPORTANT PRE-PROCEDURE INSTRUCTIONS FOR CHILDREN HAVING SURGERY UNDER GENERAL ANESTHESIA

The following instructions are designed to provide your child with a safe, comfortable surgical and anesthesia experience. Please follow all instructions completely.
    1. Your child may not have anything to eat after midnight on the night before surgery. However, your child may have clear liquids, and clear liquids only, according to the following schedule:
Newborn – 1 month: Up to 2 hours before procedure
1 month and older: Up to 4 hours before procedure

    2. Have your child shower or bathe the night before or morning of the procedure. If your child wears nail polish, please remove it from one fingernail. Braid or tie back long hair.

    3. If your child has any change in his or her health before the date of the procedure, notify your child's surgeon. Report any signs or symptoms such as: fever, sore throat, or other infection, rash, scab or wound near the surgical site, etc. Your child's procedure may be postponed.

    4. Have your child wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that is easy to get off and on. A gown will be provided.

    5. Please leave all valuables at home.

    6. If the patient is under 18 years of age, a parent or legal guardian must accompany him/her.

    7. If your child is scheduled to go home the same day as his or her procedure, you must arrange for a responsible adult to drive your child home and stay with him/her for 24 hours after the procedure, unless your child has only a local anesthetic. For small children, we recommend two (2) adults to accompany them during the drive home – one to care for the child and the other to drive.

    8. You should bring:
      - Any of your child's test results you may have.
      - Physician referrals, insurance forms, and insurance card.
      - Case for contact lenses or eyeglasses.
      - Favorite toy or blanket.
      - Bottle or sippy cup.
      - Guardianship papers, if applicable.
      - Immunization record.

    9. The day of the procedure report to Outpatient Registration located near the Outpatient Entrance on the west side of Olathe Medical Center. The Pre-operative Assessment Nurse will let you know what time to arrive. It is very important that you arrive promptly so that there is adequate time to prepare your child for his or her procedure.

If you have any questions prior to the day of your child's procedure, please contact the Pre-operative Assessment Nurse between the hours of 7:00 am and 7:00 pm, Monday through Friday at (913) 791-4232.
